<p>Ocean Visions’&nbsp;<a href="https://oceanvisions.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/A-Comprehensive-Program-to-Prove-or-Disprove-Marine-Carbon-Dioxide-Removal-Technologies-by-2030_FINAL.pdf">new high level road map</a>&nbsp;emphasizes the importance of field trials of different mCDR technologies, at appropriate scales, to answer important outstanding questions, such as efficacy, durability, measurability, and impact to marine ecosystems and humans.</p>



<p>A growing number of field trials performed by research institutions, startups, and others are being conducted in a variety of geographic locations.</p>



<p>To increase awareness of the state of development and improve knowledge-sharing across the ocean-climate community, Ocean Visions has built a database of all known field trials. The tool includes information on the different mCDR pathways being tested, details of carbon dioxide sequestration, MRV strategy, and lessons learned from the trials.</p>

<p>As the hard realities of climate change become clearer in our daily lives, taking responsibility for mitigating these effects is a front-of-mind issue. But meaningful change does not mean a grim life of deprivation. New habits and energy-smart investments can make a real difference.</p>



<p><a href="https://publichealth.gwu.edu/departments/environmental-and-occupational-health/peter-lapuma" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Peter LaPuma,&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;of the Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University, recommends finding an activity that fits your budget and energy level.</p>



<p>&#8220;Treat it like something that&#8217;s fun and get into it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Learn about an energy-saving activity enough to where you feel comfortable with it; then move on to the next activity.&#8221;</p>



<p>This project relied on the expertise of LaPuma and&nbsp;<a href="https://publichealth.gwu.edu/departments/environmental-and-occupational-health/sabrina-mccormick" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sabrina McCormick,&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;both associate professors of environmental and occupational health at the George Washington University, to explain meaningful ways each person can reduce the rapid rate of climate change and contribute to a healthier planet on different scales.</p>



<p>“I wanted to learn how to live sustainably and demonstrate that it’s a good quality of life,” said LaPuma, who has tried many of the recommendations below. “I didn&#8217;t want people to think that it was running off into a cave somewhere and becoming a hermit or something like that. This is actually a very good, very healthy lifestyle.”</p>

<p>Even though ocean and coastal acidification may sound scary, there are simple steps you can take to reduce your contribution to the problem. Simple choices and small behavior changes add up over time and across communities. The first step is to get the facts and make sure your family and community are aware that this issue is real, measurable, and happening now. Anything that reduces energy consumption or increases energy efficiency is the right move because such actions ultimately help to reduce carbon emissions and pollution.</p>

Not only will the inventory support a gaps analysis to help decision makers identify strategic monitoring locations, optimize sensor choice, and identify opportunities to leverage existing resources, but it will also help further the dialogue on standardizing QA/QC methods to support a more cohesive regional OCA observation network. Information gathered from this inventory may also support NOAA&#8217;s upcoming Coastal Community Vulnerability Assessment and Monitoring Prioritization plan. </p>

<p>In this four-part educational video series about Coastal and Ocean Acidification in the Mid-Atlantic, we’ll introduce you to the sources of coastal and ocean acidification, the impacts of more acidified waters on coastal habitats, fisheries, and the people whose livelihoods rely on them, and the technology scientists are developing to monitor acidification and remove carbon dioxide from the ocean. After learning the causes, impacts, and some innovative solutions currently underway, find out what actions you can take to protect your coastal waters from future acidification.</p>

<p>Coastal communities in the Mid-Atlantic depend on the ocean for their livelihoods. As the ocean absorbs more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and becomes more acidic (lower pH), small changes in the food chain can ripple up to the seafood caught and sold locally. <p>Technological advances in acidification monitoring and ocean carbon dioxide removal can help reduce ocean acidification’s impacts to Mid-Atlantic fisheries and local economy.
