PBC Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) strategies like Coastal Enhanced Weathering (CEW) sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and store it permanently in the ocean as a form of dissolved carbon called alkalinity, in turn reducing ocean acidification. While CEW and other ocean alkalinity enhancement strategies are believed to have significant potential for scale, real-world trials have only just begun. This talk will discuss how CEW works to capture CO2 as well as lessons learned from the world’s first pilots, which are taking place on the US eastern seaboard, regarding permitting, stakeholder engagement, scientific outcomes, future challenges and more.
